Enter a weight and reps to see your estimated max, training weights and a rep-max chart.
Example: 225 lb for 5 reps.
Estimate your one-rep max deadlift from a recent set. Deadlift estimates behave differently from other lifts, so read the notes below before trusting the number.
How this deadlift calculator works
Enter a set you did recently: the weight and how many clean reps you completed before you would have failed. The calculator runs seven published estimation formulas and shows their average, the spread between them, and the weights you would use at each training percentage. Everything runs in your browser.
Worked example: Deadlift 315 lb × 5
- Epley: 315 × (1 + 5/30) = 367.5 lb
- Brzycki: 315 × 36 / (37 − 5) = 354.4 lb
- All seven formulas range from 354.4 to 374.9 lb; their average is 363.8 lb, which rounds to 365 lb.
- A working set at 80% of that estimate is 291 lb, or 290 lb after rounding to 5 lb.
Why the deadlift is the hardest lift to estimate
In research comparing common 1RM formulas on untrained college students, all seven equations tested significantly underestimated the deadlift, while performing reasonably on the bench press and squat. Your estimate may therefore be conservative. Look at the high end of the formula range as well as the average.
Getting a reliable deadlift estimate
- Use 2–5 reps. Long deadlift sets break down technique and are limited by your grip and lower back endurance.
- Reset each rep. Let the plates settle on the floor before the next pull.
- Match your style. Conventional, sumo and trap bar pulls each deserve their own estimate.
- Stop if your back position changes. A set that ends with a rounded back is not a fair measure and is not worth the risk.

Frequently asked questions
Why do rep formulas often underestimate the deadlift?
In a 1997 study comparing seven prediction equations (LeSuer and colleagues, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research), every equation significantly underestimated deadlift 1RM, even though they worked well for bench and squat. One explanation is that deadlift reps are tiring in ways a single is not. If your real max beats the estimate, that is common.
Should I use touch-and-go or dead-stop reps?
Dead-stop reps (resetting on the floor each rep) are closer to how a max single is pulled. Bouncing reps off the floor use the stretch reflex and can distort the estimate in either direction. Be consistent.
My grip gives out before my back and legs. What should I enter?
Enter what you actually completed. If grip is the limit, the estimate reflects grip strength, not your pull. Many lifters use straps or a hook grip for estimate sets, then train grip separately.
Can I use this for sumo or trap bar deadlifts?
Yes, but estimate each variation separately. Trap bar and sumo maxes often differ from conventional. Choose "Other exercise" if you want to keep them apart in My lifts.
